What is Qigong?
Disclaimer: The article is an excerpt from Lee Holden’s online course that I had taken and benefited from it. Therefore, sharing this in my blog. Qigong is a very comprehensive and powerful healing practise. At a basic level, I teach these excersises, one on one, in my city, Bangalore-India.
Qigong (pronounced chi gong) is a form of gentle exercise composed of soft and fluid movements that are repeated a number of times. It can be described as a mind-body-spirit practice that improves one’s mental and physical health by integrating posture, movement and breathing technique.
Qi (also spelled chi) means “energy” or “life force.” It can also mean “breath” and “air,” and by extension it also means “vitality.” Qi is the basis of all traditional Chinese healing arts, from acupuncture to herbal medicine. It is the very breath of life that animates every function of our body and mind.
When we are healthy, our qi flows smoothly through every part of our body. Qi gives our blood the energy to flow and nourish all our cells, and it powers our immune system, our digestive system, and our nervous system. Further, it is the power behind our mental energy: our ability to think clearly, reason, make decisions, and maintain our will.
We are born with Qi, the inherited life-force energy derived from the egg and sperm of, respectively, our mother and father. This energy is our Prenatal Qi or Original Qi. Our Original Qi is stored in the lower abdomen between the navel, kidneys, and sexual organs; this area is known as the Lower Dan Tien, or “Elixir Field.” Our Original Qi is like a battery; it is the basis of our constitutional strength. If our battery has a strong charge and can easily recharge after a slight drain, then we are “preserving our Original Qi” and will enjoy good health.
Our Original Qi also helps us to process and absorb energy from other sources, particularly from air, food, and water. We also absorb energy from the sun, the moon, the earth, the stars, the planets, and directly from nature. All these sources of energy are known as Postnatal Qi. These combine with our Original Qi to form the qi of our organs and energy meridian channels.
Qi, as I stated, means “energy,” as well as “breath.” Gong (also spelled kung) is a general term meaning “work” or “skill.” Hence the term Qigong may be translated as “breathing exercise” or “energy work.” In terms of the practice of qi gong exercises, the term qigong signifies “an expertise at working with life-force energy.” Becoming experts at working with our internal energy gives us the resources to make choices and manifest the kind of day and the kind of life that we want.

About the Authour – Lee Holden
Lee Holden is an internationally celebrated Qi Gong master. He is also a well known television personality who has appeared regularly on PBS. In 2009, he was honored by the International Chi Gong Association. Lee is a licensed Chinese medical doctor and acupuncturist and the co-founder of the Santa Cruz Integrative Medicine and Chi Center.
An instructor in meditation, t’ai chi, qi gong, and stress management, he has recorded dozens of audio and DVD programs and also written a book Seven Minutes of Magic: Recharge Your Body Each Day with Qi Gong. He lives in Santa Cruz, California.
